Move over, Dylan’s! Watch your back Economy! There’s a new candy shop in town. Papabubble’s owners, Christopher King and Nigel Chouri, left their native Australia when the business of running their candy empire took over the fun of creating their sweet sensations. But a new space in Barcelona was followed in quick succession by Amsterdam and Tokyo outposts, and, at long last, the burnt sugar smell drifting down Broome Street belies the presence of New York’s very own Papabubble. The heavy glass jars lining the walls contain candies in a rainbow of jewel tones, golden lozenges (honey ginger) and a shocking green (a mouth watering lime) some of the prettiest among them. The attractive twenty-somethings behind the counter are quick to help, pointing out their personal favorites, and offering scraps of whatever’s hot. They make each little gem by hand, first mixing the molten sugar with spices and fruit oils, then pulling it to glassy shine and cutting it on a marble slab right in the store front. Their classic flavors, such as the humbugs (peppermint swirl), are deliciously old fashioned, but it’s the seasonal specialties (chocolate filled candy canes for the holidays!) that will keep you going back, all year round. –Lindsey Keenan
